- Why is understanding design principles alone not enough to become an artist?
- How is the process different for fine and commercial artists?

1.) You need more than just an
understanding about design principles. You also need the creativity that
is vital to being an artist. Just because you know ALL the principles
in being an artist doesn't mean you're going to ace in what you do. You
absolutely must have you're own creative freedom-- otherwise you're
pieces may not be very personal, it may just be what you think they have
to be. And who wants that?
2.) Depending on how extensive a
particular project is, commerical artists may be spending less time on
their piece than say a fine artist. I checked out a crazy website
featuring ONLY fine artist stuff and man can they create! Their usage of
fine line is incredible. Commercial artists can go through difficult
processes in creating their pieces, but their job is the focus on what
they are selling. Usually when they're trying to sell something, they
shouldn't have fine detail in their work otherwise the viewer may be
confused in whether or not the artist is actually trying to sell the
product or just selling the artwork that goes with it.
3.)
Convergent thinking is thinking without creativity whereas divergent
thinking is. There really are no similarities other than that they both
are ways of thinking. Designers tend to think divergently because they
want their peices to be creative and meaningful. Thinking only
convergently wouldn't allow designers to design what they intend to.
4.) Ideas come from the awesome part of our brains. They also come from other ideas or maybe even abstract thoughts.
5.)
Processes could include being inspired by other artists. Maybe
venturing forth outside and being inspired by nature. Or even doing
something as simple as looking up an idea online and getting so much
from outside sources.
6.) You can become a better artist by simply opening your mind to new ideas and learning from others.
